Will Dec. 17, 2005 be the OLD Terre Haute House's LAST Saturday standing?
YES, without a doubt!
MAYBE, if all goes well.
NOT SURE, I need to drive by and look.
NO, I don't think so.

The new Terre Haute House?
Well...No...but this hotel in Canada sure looks like the old THH!  Special thanks to J. Newkirk in KY for pointing this out to us.

-Copper Bar Opens-

Showcasing one of the significant artifacts to be saved from the former Marine Room, The Copper Bar opened April 22nd.  Some Trivia:   Did you know there is another half to the bar?  Did you also know that the two halves were made  by separate firms in Chicago?  The second half was added when the Mayflower Room opened in 1936.  And, the bar had "concealed lighting" under the rail to highlight the copper.  This and more info to come soon!

TERRE HAUTE HOUSE
ARTIFACT UPDATE
COMING SOON

With the exception of postcards, Terre Haute House artifacts still seem to be hard to find and in high demand.  We have acquired several new pieces for the archive in recent months and hope to share those with you as soon as possible.  If anyone out there would like to share photos of their THH collectibles, please drop us an e-mail.  We will be happy to place your photo in the archive and even list your contribution anonymously if you prefer.  On an interesting note, I did stumble across a photo of one of the original cash registers from the hotel.  I don't know the person who has it, but they certainly appear to have spent many hours restoring it.  Here is the link.
Just scroll down the page and you will see it.  I have also heard that a local family has a dining table from the original Prairie House!
Let us know what you have!
FIFTH FLOOR
TAKING SHAPE!
Placement of the fifth floor slabs began today and the main entry is starting to "show it's profile" at the new Hilton Garden Inn Terre Haute House.  Window installation continues along with interior framing, duct work, electrical, plumbing, and more.    Occupancy is set for Semptemer 1, 2007.  If you are one of the trades-men, please drop us an
e-mail to tell us about the progress.
The former Tribune Building in Terre Haute, Indiana will soon take on a new lease in life as a Candlewood Suites (c) extended stay hotel.  The hotel will be operated by Dora Hotels Co. LLC, operators of the new Hilton Garden Inn Terre Haute House currently under construction across the street.  Some environmental remediation has already taken place and construction should be under way soon.  The building was constructed in 1912 by local business man and past owner of the Terre Haute Tribune, Crawford Fairbanks.
APRIL 2007:
The former Liberty and Grand Theater will soon vanish to make way for a new six-story structure designed to match the existing former Tribune Building.  The Theater had been stripped of it's original beauty for many decades.  Later known as The Grand Theater, it ceased operation as a second play movie house in 1978 and was gutted further to become a warehouse for the newspaper's new printing press.

Activity may begin soon!

one known onlooker.   The actual "Topping Out" of the entire building was completed today, May 11th.

APPRECIATE WHAT WE STILL HAVE DOWNTOWN!
(May 12, 2007)
Unfortunately, Terre Haute has managed to rid itself of many of it's beloved "eyesores" in the past decades.  When I say "eyesores" I am, ofcourse, being sarcastic.  I was once the youngest member of the Vigo Preservation Alliance at about ten years of age.
I've seen firsthand the loss of the Big Four Depot, the Preston House, numerous storefronts on Wabash, numerous buildings at ISU while attending college, and most recently, the historic THH, F-H Savings, and Bement-Rea.
Sadly, this mentality is nothing new here.  Terre Haute has been on a "demolition spree" for about 75 years now!  Go look at the Juliet Peddle slides or the Martin Photos.   Unfortunately, we cannot undo the past.  What we can do is get involved in the future.  Be sure to frequent the downtown and its faithful businesses.  Buy their goods and services and thank them for their contribution to the downtown.
If you are concerned about the future of any particular structure, start making inquiries, phone calls, and e-mail the city.  An Example:  We need to start dialogue now to insure that the former  Albrecht (aka Ellis Bldg.), The Ford-Overstreet, The Swope-Nehf, and the Bement-Blumberg buildings on the north side of Wabash between 5th and 6th aren't forgotten!
Look all over the city--abandoned structures have recently seen a dramatic decrease in "life expectancy" under our current administration.  This is both good and bad.  The GOOD is because of economic development, public safety, and in some cases they really are eyesores (i.e. abandoned warehouses east of ISU on Chestnut).  The BAD is obviously when we lose historic structures that have the potential to contribute to the aesthetic beauty of Terre Haute and draw visitors.
I am thrilled that the former Trib will be rehabbed and that the new Children's Museum will stay downtown.  Our downtown still has potential!  Yes, we lost what could have been a beautifully restored hotel.  But, we still have the Deming (should it's function ever change in the future) and we still have our one and only skyscraper--the Sycamore Building.  Go look around, appreciate what we still have, and get organized now so that we don't lose anything else!

HILTON GARDEN INN
TERRE HAUTE HOUSE
PROGRESS
(June 1, 2007)

Progress on the new Hilton Garden Inn Terre Haute House seems to be moving along at a rapid pace although the news recently reported that the rate of progress was "not as fast as developers first thought."  It is exciting to see the stonework going in around the base and it looks like we might be in for a pleasant surprise!  Sources close to the project had originally stated that most of the hotel would be covered in a "blown concrete" application rather than brick.  The good news is that there appears to be massive amounts of brick arriving onsite this weekend.  7th Street actually had to be closed today to receive the brick and will be closed again from Sunday to Monday.  (source: tribstar.com)
Also, in a change from the original rendering of the new hotel, it appears that the color scheme may have changed as well.  The stone work around the bottom is now light colored like limestone and the brick is red.  Cool!  Maybe they want it to match the new parking garage?  Anyway, if all this is as it appears, the new hotel may fit into the context of the historic downtown better than many originally thought.

CANDLEWOOD SUITES-CHILDREN'S MUSEUM
PROGRESS
(June 1, 2007)

Progress on the new Candlewood Suites and Terre Haute Children's Museum is evident at the site of the former Tribune and Grand/Liberty Theater Buildings.  The theater is now gone from the horizon as clean up, hauling, and basement excavation continue.  The Tribune gutting is essentially complete on the 5th and 6th floors.  Gutting began on the 4th floor this past week.  Sources have said that the removal of the circa 1925 R. Hoe and Co. "Octuple Press" in the basement of the former "Trib" may begin as soon as gutting gets down to the first floor.  The 90 ton press will have to be cut into pieces and lifted out through holes cut near the edge of the building; possibly in the front sidewalk.  This press is the one that churned out the monumental 300 page edition of the Tribune released on October 25, 1925.  Ironically, it was on the front page of this special edition that the public first learned of the plans to build a "New, Modern, and Absolutely Fire-Proof  Terre Haute House" to be built by the estate of the late Crawford Fairbanks.  The edition included a drawing of the building.  You can see the original rendering here.  Funny how history repeats itself.  When the hotel was completed in 1928, some complained that the original THH (from the 1800's) had more historic appeal!

OTHER HAPPENIN' S
DOWNTOWN

(June 1, 2007)

The former Hamilton and Harrison Co. building was razed behind Hulman Center.  The company was in the confectionary business many decades ago.  The building had most recently been storage for the ISU theater department.

It appears that interior demolition has begun on the
former lab school at ISU.  This building will become the new School of Education.

The new Multi Modal Transportation Facility (parking garage) is beginning to rise above ground at 7th and Cherry.

Restoration of Hulman and Co. and St. Ben's exteriors continues on 9th St.

With all the excitement downtown, rumors abound about more upcoming projects...stay tuned!

The beautiful abandoned buildings on the north side of Wabash between 5th and 6th St. still sit patiently...waiting for someone who cares enough to save them!

Keep up the great work folks!

You are bringing our downtown back to life!

CANDLEWOOD SUITES/CHILDREN'S MUSEUM/FORMER TRIB PROGRESS--FEBRUARY 27, 2008

Floor surfaces in the Trib are nearly complete.  The openings in back have been sealed and some temporary heating has been installed.   Interior framing, wiring, and plumbing is complete on two floors.  New elevators will be installed soon.  Work on the front facade restoration began this week and removal of the ground floor walk-in safe is now done.  The building received a new wall across the back that will also raise the back profile of the building by about eight feet.  There is still some basement clean out left to do.
Soil compaction is complete at the site of the new Children's Museum.
Groundbreaking was on Wednesday, December 5, 2007.
