Since 1838, there has been a hotel at the northeast corner of 7th and Wabash in Terre Haute, Indiana.  This corner has hosted the famous and the infamous; from John F. Kennedy to Al Capone.  It was the heart of the community and the epicenter of Hautian social life for the better part of the 20th century until urban sprawl nearly killed the downtown forever.  Now, through much hard work, and many long-fought battles, the downtown is finally coming back to life, and the tradition continues with the construction of the new Hilton Garden Inn - Terre Haute House.  Terrehautehouse.net is THE definitive resource for history, photos, videos, and artifacts relating to hoteldom at the historic "Crossroads of America".

Comments from Our Readers and Viewers:

Very much interested in the "new" Terre Haute House.  We have lots of good memories of the old one.  My Mother, Helen Phelps,  was night switch board operator in the late Thirties.  She married Eddie Taylor, (my step father), a "newsboy" whose corner was 7th and Wabash, "Crossroads of America."  US 41, north and south, US 40, east and west.  A plaque is now located on the southwest corner noting Eddie's service. My older brother, Robert "Bob" Phelps, worked in the food preparation area for the Catering Manager, Emil Noseda, in the late "thirties" while attending Indiana State.   My wife, Peggy Sullivan, and I were married in 1944, in the Green Room on the mezzanine.  My wife's uncle, Joseph Sullivan, was the assistant manager. My wife and I both remember, very well attending, many dances in the Mayflower Ballroom.  In the information you share regarding public rooms on the first floor, you did not mention the Marine Room, a delightful bar/restaurant, on the south east part of the building.  We are very glad that your new hotel is going up in the same location.  Congratulations!
